Health Department restarts #MosquitoMonday awareness campaign

The Knox County Health Department has resumed its #MosquitoMonday awareness campaign.

Mosquito season is back - and so is the Knox County Health Department's campaign to combat it.

The department kicked off its #MosquiitoMonday awareness program, which offers tips and advice each Monday to remind area residents about area mosquitoes and the threats they carry.

May's warm and humid weather has brought out the disease-carrying insects. They'll be around all summer, and they reproduce quickly.

You can follow the department's campaign on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Many species of mosquito are in Tennessee including the Culex, which can carry the West Nile virus. West Nile can cause fever and other symptoms. It can sometimes lead to death, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Another troublesome mosquito is the Aedes, which can carry La Crosse encephalitis. Symptoms include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, and tiredness, according to the CDC.

There are many ways you can avoid exposure to mosquito bites, according to health officials.

For example, you should keep repellant handy whenever you're outside. Wear loose, long and light-colored clothing.

Keep your roof gutters cleared. Look out for any spots in the yard where water can accumulate. Mosquitoes like to use standing water to lay their eggs.
