NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A meningitis alert has been issued to parents of students at four Newport News schools.
The person diagnosed serves at Sedgefield Elementary School, Crittenden Middle School, Huntington Middle School and Warwick High School.
The rare, contagious disease causes inflammation of brain and spinal cord membranes, and is usually brought on by an infection.
Symptoms include headache, fever and a stiff neck. People can also experience nausea, vomiting, sensitive eyes and a confused state. If you think your child is experiencing these symptoms, call your doctor.
The Peninsula Health District says there’s no need to do anything if your child seems healthy.
