Bat tests positive for rabies in El Paso County

A bat found outside of a Colorado Springs convenience store is the first bat to test positive for rabies in El Paso County in 2018.

El Paso County Public Health says the bat was spotted outside of the Alta Convenience Store off of Palmer Park Boulevard in northeast Colorado Springs. Customers first saw the bat under an ice machine at the store on May 31.

On June 5 public health was notified of a possible exposure to a customer. The bat was captured and tested. The results came back positive for rabies.

Anyone who may have had contact with the bat on or after May 31 should call El Paso County Health right away at (719) 578-3220 there is a risk of rabies. Those who saw the bat or were in the area but did not have any physical contact are not at risk.
