Deer from Marinette County farm tests positive for CWD
A white-tailed deer from a breeding farm in Marinette County has tested positive for chronic wasting disease, according to the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection.
CWD is caused by an infectious protein that effects the animal's brain.
The farm has been quarantined, which means no animals can move in or out.
The two-year-old doe was born on the farm and died during fawning, DATCP says.
The farm, which is fenced, has 320 whitetail deer. The state did not identify the farm by name.
The state says the farm had not been enrolled in the CWD Herd Status program since May 2017.
The state's Animal Health Division will investigate to see if other herds may have been exposed to the deer.
Testing for CWD can only be done after an animal's death.
