Calcutta, June 26.— The Department of Statistics, India, issues the following note on the deaths from plague in 1918: During the past twelve months the lowest number (100) of deaths from plague was returned in the last week of June 1917, but the number was still above the decennial average (776). From the first week of July the number began to rise almost steadily, always showing an increase over the decennial average until the maximum number in this period of twelve months was reached in the second week of March 1918 when 32,381 deaths were recorded against 15,563 decennial average. It may be noted that this highest number in 1918 was far below the record of 1907 when 82,000 deaths were recorded in the second week of May 1907. Since the third week of March the number began to fall, although it continued to stand above the decennial average.
