12 Dane Co. beaches closed due to toxic, blue-green algae

12 of Dane County's 19 beaches and lake access points are currently closed due to high levels of toxic, blue-green algae.

Here is a list of the beaches that are closed as of Friday, June 29 at 2:16 p.m:

• Bernies

• Brittingham

• Esther

• Goodland County Park

• Hudson Park Lake Access Point

• James Madison

• Marshall

• Memorial Union (Pier)

• Olbrich Beach

• Spring Harbor

• Tenney

• Warner

As of Friday afternoon, the beaches at B.B. Clarke, Frost Woods in Monona, Lake Mendota, Olin, Schluter, Steward County Park and Vilas are open.

The Public Health Department of Dane County Madison tests water for bacteria levels daily and the beaches will remain closed until the blue-green algae levels decrease.

NBC15 previous reported that algae blooms pop up especially after rain fall. Run-off from farming and hot temperatures are also factors contributing to bacteria levels in Madison-area lakes.
