Update----
Bacteria samples associated with a water main break in the city's northwest quadrant have returned negative. This confirms that water in the impacted area is safe to consume without first having been boiled.
----------
The City of Cedar Rapids has issued a precautionary boil order for a section of northwest Cedar Rapids after a water main break southwest of the Johnson Avenue and Wiley Boulevard NW intersection.
According to a city media release, this is a precautionary measure and they are asking those within the listed boundary to consider boiling water. The city also stressed that in the case of women who are pregnant or nursing or for infants who are under six months of age only bottled water should be used, instead of the water boiling method, according to the release.
The affected area is:
' Woodsonia Court NW to the North
' Jacolyn Drive NW to the East
' Cox Ave NW to the South
' Clive Drive NW to the West
The city says the water main break disrupted normal operation of the water system, which has created a potential for contamination by bacteria. The city says there has been no testing indicating that there is bacteria present, but these steps can be taken for additional protection.
' Bring water to a boil
' Let it rapidly boil for at least 1 minute
' Allow to cool completely before consuming
The city says crews have been dispatched to the break and repairs are expected to be completed soon. Once the repairs are completed, pressure will be restored to the pipes, the affected area will be flushed, chlorine levels will be monitored and bacterial samples collected for analysis. Final analysis will be completed by Monday, July 2 at 8 a.m., at which time the boil advisory will either be lifted or extended, according to the release.
