After a record year in 2017 reporting more than 186,000 dengue fever cases, 2018 show a very different picture through the first six months of the year.
From Jan-Jun this year, Sri Lanka health authorities have reported approximately 25,000 dengue fever cases. Still a high number based on recent history of the mosquito borne virus on the island nation; however, dramatically lower than the approximately 87,000 cases reported for the same period last year.
The areas hit the hardest this year by dengue include Colombo, Batticaloa and Gampaha.

Another infectious disease related to the rains in Sri Lanka is leptospirosis. Unlike dengue, health authorities have seen an increase in people infected with the spiral bacterium.
The number of cases year to date in Sri Lanka stands at 1,887, about 400 more cases seen during the first six months of 2017. Ratnapura, Kalutara and Moneragala RDHS have reported the highest number of cases.
