Some wildlife experts in Western New York spent Independence Day trying to save a bald eagle.

The bird was near death when it was found close to a cottage on Lake Ontario Sunday night by a family on vacation.

The family told rescuers that the eagle had fallen and couldn’t get up.

Experts believe the eagle is young, about a year old. It’s likely a male due to its size.

The eagle is in critical condition, but wildlife experts from the SPCA Serving Erie County say its health is improving.

They’re testing the eagle for diseases such as West Nile virus.

“There are all sorts of reasons a bird could get sick, but right now it’s in really good hands,” said Barb Haney, director of wildlife for the SPCA. “We’re basically keeping the bird alive and giving it supportive care giving it pain medication and vitamins.”

Haney said the SPCA is taking it “day by day” with recovery efforts. If the eagle’s condition does not improve, the SPCA would have to make a decision along with the state DEC and U.S. Fish and Wildlife to euthanize it.

Bald eagles can live up to 30 to 40 years.

The SPCA has started a fundraiser for the bald eagle. Donations can be made here.
