In order to take precaution and decrease the number of malaria cases, the civic-run public health department has started screening family members of every patient detected with malaria fever.

According to the official report of the department, in the month of June city has recorded 356 number of malaria cases and zero deaths. The public health department officials stated that they are compulsorily screening family members of patients detected with malaria and neighbours too.

Speaking about screening surrounding members, Dr Santosh Revankar, BMC joint executive health officer, said, “Along with the patients there is a possibility that the surrounding could also be affected. Family members’ screening is compulsory but we can’t force the neighbours. As part of awareness and precautionary measures we tell them to get themselves screened.”

As per the BMC, they started collecting blood slides to see parasite free for malaria in labour workers since the month of May. The mosquito breeding spots for malaria are more often seen in under-construction working spaces.

The city has an average annual parasite incidence (API) of 0.4 cases per 1,000 population, which is less than one case per 1,000 population. In other wards API is around 0.3-0.4 cases per 1,000 population, the API is 0.8-0.9 cases per 1,000 population in F/South, G/South, and E ward of the city.

“In the slums and construction working area more breeding spots are detected due to which blood slides of labours to see that they are parasite free beings from the month of May. Due to more public infrastructure construction work going on across the city this year, the number of labour underwent blood slides are 40 per cent in comparison to last years,” added Dr Revankar.
