A La Crosse woman has died of a tick disease rarely found in the Midwest.

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services announced it is the first documented death from Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever in the state. While most tick-borne diseases in Wisconsin come from deer ticks, RMSF is actually transmitted from wood ticks. Because of the death, health departments are urging people to take precautions against tick bites.

It’s recommended to stay on trails, use repellent, wear long sleeves, pants, and closed-toe shoes and check yourself after being outdoors.
