Fair organizers across Indiana have been on the look-out for swine flu, after someone at a fair tested positive last week.
It’s unknown what county, and what fair, the positive diagnosis came from, but those involved with agriculture at Gibson County’s Fair aren’t taking any chances.
Like other fairs in the state, Gibson’s Fair has hand-washing stations throughout the livestock building and each pig is inspected as they arrive.
Any animal that is sick or looks “off” is reported to a vet.
“We’ve implemented this protocol when there was an issue in some county fairs five or six years back,” says fair board director and veterinarian John Feutz. “This year we had an issue in another county it opened our eyes to make sure we’ve doing the right thing. We’ve continued to follow this strict protocol and I think that is really follow through on us not having any issues.”
Every pig that has come to the Gibson County Fair this week has been healthy.
There are also signed throughout the area — encouraging hand washing if you are around the pigs.
