2 Suffolk Beaches Closed To Bathing

The beaches were shut down due to the discovery of high levels of bacteria.

TOWN OF ISLIP, NY - Lake Ronkonkoma and Benjamins Beach, both located in the Town of Islip, are closed to bathing due to the finding of bacteria at levels in excess of acceptable criteria, the Suffolk County Department of Health announced on Thursday.

Tanner Park Beach in Babylon and Sound Beach Property Owners’ Association West Beach and Beech Road Beach in Brookhaven remain closed.

According to Suffolk County Commissioner of Health Dr. James Tomarken, bathing in bacteria-contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose, and throat.
