VIRGINIA BEACH, VA (WAVY) — Mosquitoes in three areas of Virginia Beach have tested positive for West Nile Virus, officials say.

City officials said in a news release the positive results came from mosquitoes tested in the Oxford Drive in the Kings Grant neighborhood, North Witchduck Road in the Kempsville area and Constitution Drive in the Pembroke area.

Jennifer Barritt, biologist with VB Mosquito Control, said in a news release these area have historically had positive tests for West Nile.

Most people who catch the virus show no symptoms, but some can get mild flu-like symptoms. A small number develop more serious neurological disorders.

The city is increasing night-time spraying efforts in response. Mosquito control will be focusing larviciding efforts on stagnant water where mosquitoes could be breeding.

Officials said residents should dump any container that may catch and hold rainwater.

According to the Virginia Beach Department of Public Health, can take the following precautions to avoid mosquitoes:

  • Wear long, loose and light colored clothing.
  • Use insect repellent products registered with the EPA.  No more than 50 percent DEET for adults and less than 30 percent DEET for children.  Use care when applying repellents to children.  Follow all label instructions.
  • Turn over or remove containers in your yard where rainwater collects, such as plant trays, buckets, and toys.
  • Clean birdbaths and wading pools weekly.
  • Check window and door screens so mosquitoes cannot enter the home.
