CARY, N.C. --  A city in Wake County has its first confirmed case of rabies.

  • Dogs came in contact with a rabid raccoon on Monday
  • Dogs are receiving treatment
  • Make sure your pets are vaccinated

A homeowner living near Old Apex Road reported that she and her two dogs came into contact with a rabid raccoon on July 9.

Authorities say the rabies vaccinations for both dogs lapsed and now they'll have to receive treatment and remain under 45-day observation.

Animal control officials want to remind everyone to make sure their pets are fully vaccinated against the rabies virus.

They also warn residents to use caution when dealing with suspicious animals or pets.
