16 new malaria cases reported last week

New Delhi: With 16 fresh cases reported last week, the total number of malaria-affeted patients has reached 122 this year. Meanwhile, 13 of dengue were also reported last week, taking the total cases of the vector-borne disease to 75. Trends show that malaria continues to spread faster than dengue in Delhi.

A report released by South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) on Monday revealed that 53,583 households in the Capital have been found positive for mosquito-breeding and 58,521 legal notices have been served for various violations.

Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal, on June 28, directed local bodies and other agencies to intensify vector-control measures. He also called for regular review meetings at district magistrate level with all stakeholders to review situation in their respective districts.

The LG had directed officials of the Municipal Corporations to intensify vector-control measures by domestic breeding checkers and distribute information, education and communication (IEC) material for creating public awareness in identified high-risk wards and underprivileged areas, unauthorised colonies, JJ clusters, construction sites, etc.

Ten people died due to dengue in Delhi last year, according to SDMC. Five of the victims were not Delhi residents, but they died in the city. Overall, dengue affected 9,271 people in the city last year.
