Culex Tarsalis mosquitoes, the ones capable of carrying West Nile Virus, have started to show up in the Steinbach area as they commonly do about the middle of July. But Russ Dyck, head of Steinbach Parks and Recreation, says traps have not turned up any infected mosquitoes to this point. And he adds mosquito numbers are very low.

"This year, the provincial trap numbers show relatively low numbers. They are quite low actually. For Steinbach, the average trap count in the last four weeks has been ranging between two and seven (per week) in terms of the culex population. Total numbers are also very low, averaging between four and eighteen."

Dyck says there is not much standing water in and around Steinbach but wherever there are potential mosquito-breeding areas, they are doing larviciding to stay on top of things.

"We've been fortunate the last numbers of years, we've generally had pretty low mosquito numbers."

Manitoba health says there have been no human cases of West Nile Virus in the province so far this year. Only four infected mosquitoes have been detected in traps, three in the Eastern-Interlake region and one in Winnipeg.
