BRUNSWICK COUNTY -- Officials are urging residents to take precautions after Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) was found in mosquitoes in central Brunswick County, according to a release from Brunswick County.

The disease was found July 18 in a species of mosquitoes that circulates EEE in the wild bird population. The species does not typically bite humans, according to the release.

Brunswick County Mosquito Control is spraying for the insects and plans to do so until populations are reduced.

Residents should wear light-colored, long-sleeved shirts and long pants, David Stanley, Brunswick County's Health and Human Services executive director, said in the release. Stanley also urged residents to avoid being outside at dusk and dawn, as well as to apply mosquito repellent.

Horse owners should, according to the release, check with their vets about proper vaccines for horses and change water troughs at least twice a week.
