A survey found the presence of aedes mosquito larvae at one in three homes in Dhaka South City.
The survey was conducted by Dhaka South City Corporation’s health department in all the 57 wards from June 25 to July 15.
While releasing the findings mayor Mohammad Sayeed Khokon said Saturday that the survey found Dhanmondi, Kalabagan, Segunbagicha and other posh areas as the highest mosquito breeding neighbourhoods.
He said that the presence of aedes larvae was found at 46 per cent of the houses at Shegunbagicha, at 45 per cent of the houses at Dhanmondi, at 41 per cent of the houses at Kalabagan and Kathalbagan.
Khokon also launched the second anti-mosquito drive in all the posh neighbourhoods.
The mayor expressed concern over the posh residential areas topping the list of the highest aedes mosquito breeding neighbourhoods.
According to the Health Services Directorate General at least 638 dengue patients took admission in hospitals in the capital in July and four of them died.
According to the National Health Crisis Management Centre’s control room 992 dengue patients were hospitalized in the capital since January1 and eight of them died.
In 24 hours ending at 4PM on Saturday, at least 22 dengue patients took admission at hospitals increasing the number of admitted patients in the capital to 59.
DSCC officials said that the survey of 20,000 houses found the presence of aedes larvae at one in every three houses in Dhaka South City.
The mayor said that the presence of aedes larvae was much less in old Dhaka.
He said that public awareness was needed for stamping out aedes mosquito menace.
He said that DSCC staff destroyed aedes mosquito breeding spots and acquainted families how to keep their homes free from the menace.
The mayor warned that house owners would be punished if breeding facilities were detected at their homes.
