Smoke from forest fires has led Environment Canada to send out a Special Air Quality Statement for North Bay, Mattawa, Powassan, West Nipissing and French River today.

Here's the Alert:

"Smoke from a large forest fire west of Key River is causing locally poor air quality and reduced visibilities. The smoke is blowing northeastward across Highway 69 affecting areas near Grundy Lake Provincial Park towards Lake Nipissing. Smoke may also affect air quality in the North Bay area.

"High levels of air pollution have developed due to smoke from forest fires. These higher pollution levels are expected to persist through Monday and possibly the next few days.

"Individuals may experience symptoms such as increased coughing, throat irritation, headaches or shortness of breath. Children, seniors, and those with cardiovascular or lung disease, such as asthma, are especially at risk."

Visit www.airhealth.ca for information on how to reduce your health risk and your personal contribution to pollution levels, as well as for current and forecast AQHI values.
