In a follow-up on the measles outbreak in Brazil, the Ministry of Health reports the number of measles cases in the outbreaks in Amazonas and Roraima states now stand at 742 and 280, respectively as of Aug.1.
Health officials say the outbreaks are related to importation. This was confirmed by the genotype of the virus (D8) that was identified, which is the same that circulates in Venezuela.
In addition, some isolated and import-related cases were identified in the states of São Paulo (1), Rio de Janeiro (14); Rio Grande do Sul (13); Rondônia (1) and Pará (2).
The goal of measles vaccination is 95%. In 2017, preliminary data indicate that coverage in Brazil was 85.2% for the first dose and 69.9% for the second dose.
On August 6, the National Vaccination Campaign against Poliomyelitis and Measles begins, which runs through the 31st. In total, 11.2 million children should be vaccinated.
The goal is to vaccinate at least 95% of children to reduce the possibility of polio return and reemergence of measles, diseases already eliminated in Brazil. All children between the ages of 1 year and under 5 years should be taken to the vaccination posts, regardless of the previous vaccination situation.
