(WAFF) - Parents, a warning about a whooping cough outbreak in two Alabama counties.

WAFF 48 News talked with a doctor who has some tips to protect yourself and your family.

It's a sound no parent wants to hear. A deep cough that doesn't go away.

The Alabama Department of Public Health reports nine kids have tested positive for whooping cough in Shelby and Jefferson counties and 22 others have symptoms.

"It can cause seizures, it can cause pneumonia, and it can even cause death," said pediatric intensivist Dr. Susan Morris.

Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is an illness Morris at Huntsville Hospital for Woman and Children has seen a lot in her career.

"Unfortunately, I've treated several small infants less than two months of age that have died from pertussis," said Morris. "Despite all of the advances that we have to offer."

Morris said washing your hands and taking extra precautions is a great way to prevent whooping cough from spreading. She also said it's as simple as getting a shot that can make a big difference as well.

"Vaccination is probably the most important way to prevent this disease," said Morris.

Although Birmingham is more than an hour away, doctors say it's still possible for the whopping cough outbreak to spread and reach the Tennessee Valley, especially with school now starting.

Doctors say whooping cough begins with a runny nose and a low grade fever.

If your child has symptoms, you should see your doctor immediately.
