Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Malaria Center related to controlling the spread of Malaria, which has been formed by PT Freeport Indonesia through Community Health Development (CHD,) will support the Papua and West Papua Provincial Governments to welcome the implementation of the National Sports Week (PON) 2020.

Freeport Indonesia CHD Manager Govert Waramori remarked here on Sunday that this malaria mitigation effort is important in order to support the implementation of the PON 2020 in Mimika District, Papua Province.

"CHD is an institution that has the role of advocating, coordinating and facilitating the implementation of the malaria control program in Mimika to eliminate the disease 2026," Govert remarked.

According to him, the Malaria Center will collaborate and coordinate with the Mimika District Health Office to revitalize malaria control efforts so as not to interfere with the implementation of the PON in Papua.

Mimika is one of the five districts with the most malaria cases in Indonesia, besides the districts Keerom, Jayapura, Sarmi, and Boven Digoel.

"The Malaria Center aims to reduce malaria in the Land of Papua by 2030," Govert said, adding that the efforts to reduce malaria must involve all stakeholders under the control of the health department.

In the meantime, Malaria Center Technical Coordinator Iswandi said the center has been trying to eradicate malaria in Mimika District since 2013 with support from Freeport and the local government.

Iswandi explained several achievements that have been made by Malaria Center since 2013, namely insecticide spraying on 17,000 homes in Timika, then in 2014 it increased to 24,037 houses and 24,958 houses in 2015.

Not only insecticide spraying, the Malaria Center also installed mosquito nets which number increased from year to year.
