Fire ban remains but travel restrictions lifted

Some more good news on the forest fire front this morning as most travel restrictions have been lifted, although a fire ban remains in effect for most of northeastern Ontario,

There are 41 active forest fires across the northeast and of these, only six are not yet under control, 35 are either being held, under control or being observed.

One new fire was confirmed yesterday and one fire extinguished.

Due to recent rain and good progress being made in containing existing fires, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry has removed the Restricted Fire Zone for some areas of the northeast region.

The zones still affected include North Bay, Parry Sound, Burk’s Falls, Powassan, and Greater Sudbury. and areas north of Rosseau, northwest to Espanola and Cartier, over to the Quebec border including Temagami and Mattawa north of the Mattawa River.

Ontario is receiving support from across Canada, the United States and Mexico to assist with the fire situation. A total of 308 firefighters and support staff are currently in the province.

There was no growth on the fire yesterday an it remains at 11,362 hectares.

With the adjustment to the Implementation Order, people are able to return to their cottages and residences. A daytime travel restriction remains for Pickerel River and Key River. 

Local residents will continue to see smoke drift from this fire over the next two or three days as weather conditions remain hot and dry. Ground crews continue to extinguish hot spots within the fire perimeter.

North Bay Fire 072 has not grown in size and remains at 27, 285 ha and is listed as Being Held. Crews continue to remove equipment from areas of the fire that are less active.
