Bhopal: First case of JE-dengue in city sends health dept on alert

BHOPAL: The state capital reported its first ever case of co-infection of dengue and Japanese encephalitis (JE) here on Tuesday. It is the first case of co-infection, he confirmed.All India institute of medical sciences (AIIMS), Bhopal confirmed the second the diagnosis, which also makes it the second case of JE in Bhopal this year. Earlier, JE was reported for the first time in Bhopal in 2017. A 10-year-old girl with the infection was confirmed with the co-infection— arboviral diseases till now common in the tropical countries.The patient is a resident of Tilajamalpura area in Bhopal . Samples would also be sent to national institute of virology (NIV) Pune,” said NVBDCP state representative Himashu Jaiswal.

The patient has been admitted to Gandhi medical college (GMC) associated Kamla Nehru hospital. Doctors said the patient was under constant monitoring.The locality has already been under the scanner after cases of glanders were cited by National Research Centre on Equines (NRCE), Hisar earlier in May.“We are monitoring the situation. A special team from National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) has visited the area. Samples would also be sent to national institute of virology (NIV) Pune,” said NVBDCP state representative Himashu Jaiswal. JE is a potentially fatal infection of the brain and is rampant in parts of neighbouring UP.Experts warn that JE could set a foothold in the state. Until 2016, Chikungunya was considered non-existent in the state capital. However, this year, more cases of Chikungunya have been reported as compared to more prevalent dengue, infection.Health department and Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) have been caught off-guard and the cases of vector-borne diseases are being reported.Meanwhile, BMC along with district malaria office experts carried out anti-larvae activity in the area.
