Parks Canada is advising people to stay out of the lake on the west beaches of Point Pelee because of the potential health risk posed by bacteria in the water.

Blue-green algal blooms are visible off the western shore of the national park. The bacteria can be toxic to humans and animals, potentially causing skin rashes and gastrointestinal problems. The park is warning people to keep their pets out of the water, too.

The beaches remain open for walking, picnics and other recreational activities.
