A public health alert has been issued regarding a rabid found at the Thorndale ISD weight room.
The bat was found Wednesday about 3:30 p.m. in the weight room of the field house.
The Thorndale Police Department sent the bat for testing at the Texas Department of State Health Services in Austin where it tested positive for rabies.
While no known contact was made between the bat and any human or animal, it is unknown how long the bat may have been there.
The alert says that anyone who had contact with this bat should see a doctor as soon as possible to discuss the possible need for vaccination.
They are also asked to contact the Thorndale Police Department at 254-697-7033 and the Texas Department of State Health Services Zoonosis Control Program at 254-778-6744 to report their potential exposure.
After families assess their potential for exposure to the rabid bat, they should determine if their pets could have interacted with it.
If their pets had face-to-face contact with or were bitten by the bat, additional rabies vaccinations for the pet may be needed.
