Arlington resident has West Nile virus

An Arlington resident has contracted the county’s first case of West Nile virus this year, weeks after confirmed cases were reported in Fairfax County, Delaware and Maryland.

Health officials announced the infection Friday. The individual was not named.

The virus is carried by mosquitoes, and summer rains have produced a bumper crop of the insects.

According to federal health officials, cases of West Nile virus affecting humans have now been found in 30 states and the District this year.

Of those infected, 1 in 5 people will develop a fever or other symptoms, health officials say, while 1 in 150 will develop a severe illness.

3 loaded guns nabbed at National this month

Three loaded guns were discovered at airport checkpoints at Reagan National Airport in August, officials said, bringing the total number of weapons found this year to nine, according to airport police and the Transportation Security Administration.

On Wednesday, an Oklahoma man was caught carrying a loaded .40-caliber handgun, officials said. They said he told them he forgot to leave the gun in his car.

Earlier this month, a man was caught with a 9mm handgun, and another with a .45 caliber pistol, officials said. Each gun contained at least four bullets.

Officials said all firearms were confiscated, and the three men were cited on state weapons charges.
