West Nile virus cases have doubled in Saginaw County since August 1

SAGINAW COUNTY, Mich. – The West Nile virus has been detected in Saginaw County birds, according to the Saginaw County Mosquito Abatement Commission.

The virus is found is mosquito-borne and found in corvid birds which are crows and blue jays. It can be transmitted through a mosquito bite.

SCMAC says the virus has doubled since the beginning of August.

Recent detections have been found in Albee, Birch Run, Carrollton, Frankenmuth, Kochville, Maple Grove, Richland, Saginaw, and Swan Creek Townships, as well as Saginaw.

As of today, there’s been a total of 23 dead corvids and two mosquito samples were tested positive in Saginaw County.

SCMAC wants residents to check their yards for mosquito breeding.

Residents should:

  • Avoid being outdoors when mosquitoes are active
  • Use EPA-registered insect repellents
  • Keep mosquitoes out of the house Eliminate sources of standing water that can support mosquito breeding
