Mosquito spraying scheduled for three municipalities Wednesday

After collecting samples indicating high mosquito populations, Penn State Extension will be spraying insecticide in three York County municipalities via its West Nile Virus Program staff.

East Manchester Township, Hellam Township and Springettsbury Township will be sprayed the evening of Wednesday, Aug. 29.

The three municipalities have all previously had samples that tested positive for West Nile virus.

At the beginning of August, the program announced York County was leading the state in positive samples, and weeks later, the state Department of Health reported the county's first human case for the year.

Wednesday's spraying will occur in the following areas, according to a news release:

Hellam Township: Brookhaven Mobile Home Park, Druck Valley Road
East Manchester Township: residential areas near Mundis Race Road and North Sherman Street, north to Acorn Drive
Springettsbury Township: near North Sherman Street and Lower Glades Road

Staff will post signs the day of the spray to alert area residents, and in case of inclement weather or other unexpected events, a rain date is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 30.

The program is using Permanone Ready to Use Adulticide, applied at 0.62 ounces per acre at concentrations significantly below commercial in-home insect control products.
