A mum who was in a coma while her family became homeless due to a falling tree has died from bacterial meningitis .
Kristen Ledford was battling the deadly infection in hospital when a tree crashed onto her family home, devastating the house in Waynesville, North Carolina and leaving her partner and two kids homeless on August 8.
Kristen's brother Ryan Dawson told news WLOS : “So, while my sister lays in a coma her two children and her husband have to now deal with this tragedy as well.
“The tree, where it came through, actually went right through my niece's bedroom.”
Fortunately, no one was in at the time.
Just weeks before Kristen Ledford, 35, was airlifted to a hospital when she fell ill with an aggressive case of Bacterial Meningitis on July 26.
Doctors discovered the infection had developed from a simple ear infection leaving Kristen critically ill.
She passed away on Monday at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
According to an obituary page she leaves behind her husband James and children Rylie, 9, and Grayson, aged 5.
The touching tribute posted on the Mountaineer read: "Kristen, James, Rylie and Grayson lived a life that revolved around each other.
"On her calendar hung on her bedroom door she wrote, “family first.”
"Kristen will always be remembered as thinking about others before herself. The last three weeks have been very difficult for her family, but what gives them most solace is her legacy. Her beautiful children."
A gofundme page was set up by Ryan before Kristen's death.
At the time Ryan said: "We're hoping at this point to use that money to help them with a rental, with a house, to get them situated.
"So, then we can focus on my sister and not this mess."
So far it has raised over $47,000 for the family who have endured two back-to-back tragedies.
Heartbreakingly, Kristen's father is also in hospital in another part of the country with heart issues.
