East Mississippi has seen its first reported case this year of the West Nile virus.

The Mississippi Department of Health has reported a case in Lauderdale County. This brings the statewide total to 30 cases.

Health officials urge people to reduce risk by using insect repellent, wearing long, light-colored clothes and eliminating standing water.

Mississippi reported 63 West Nile cases and two deaths in 2017.
