Rabies warning sent out to Palmiet Drive residents

The plea follows after a dog that was found wandering around the area tested positive for rabies.

A PLEA has been made for pet owners around Palmiet Drive in Westville to seek treatment after a dog that tested positive for rabies was found wandering the street.

Andreas Mathios from Blue Security said there was a concern that people, as well as people’s pets could have become infected with the deadly disease.

The dog had reportedly been fighting with other dogs on that road and perhaps in the surrounding area as well, said Mathios, who is also involved in the NPO, Pinetown Pet Rescue.

“People in the road must have their dogs inspected by their vet immediately, especially the dogs who have not been vaccinated,” he said.

“If you know anyone or any animal that may have come into contact with this dog please ensure that they seek treatment immediately.”

He said pet owners should ensure that their pets are vaccinated against rabies as there have been outbreaks in urban as well as rural areas due to non-compliance of rabies vaccinations.

He said the dog had been taken to the Kloof and Highway SPCA.

The Highway Mail has requested comment from the Kloof and Highway SPCA.
