2 Butler County inmates diagnosed with hepatitis A
Inmates and staff members are being vaccinated after two cases of hepatitis A at the Butler County Jail, officials with the county's Sheriff's Office said Friday.Authorities said two inmates were diagnosed. One of the inmates was taken to the hospital Thursday for abdominal pain and nausea Thursday, where he tested positive.A second inmate complained of similar issues, and was diagnosed a short time later.Officials said several extra precautions are being taken, and county health officials began vaccination procedures to protect other inmates and staff.Hepatitis A is preventable by vaccine. It can spread through contaminated food or contact with someone who is infected.Symptoms include abdominal pain, low-grade fever and loss of appetite.The condition clears up on its own in one or two months, health officials said,and rest and adequate hydration can help.The inmates are expected to make a full recovery.
