Two cases of the flu were reported at Augusta Circle Elementary School last week.

Only three weeks into the new school year, two cases of the flu have already been reported at a Greenville elementary school.

Two students from two different classes at Augusta Circle Elementary School missed class time last week with the flu, said Beth Brotherton, a spokesperson for Greenville County Schools. Both students were back in class Tuesday, she said.

There is no district policy specifying a length of time students must miss if they contract the flu. Rather, their return to school after the flu is based on doctor's orders, Brotherton said.

Custodial staff at the school have done extra cleaning and students have received hand washing lessons as extra health precautions in response to the two cases, she said.

Parents were not notified, as the district only does that when 20 percent of a classroom or 10 percent of a school is affected, per the guidelines from the state Department of Health and Environmental Control, Brotherton said.
