Kerala Floods: 14 -year-old die of dengue; leptospirosis, fever claim 14 lives in four days

Thiruvananthapuram: A 14-year-old Ayisha Naha of Kozhikode district on Tuesday died of dengue fever while a 10-year-old Shahal of Malappuram district died of Acute Encephalitis Syndrome on Tuesday while the death toll due to leptospirosis in flood-ravaged Kerala rose to 7 in the four days (September 1 to 4) of this month.

Similarly, 7 persons died of fever so far this month.

Shibin, 27 of Edavanna in Malappuram district died of leptospirosis on Tuesday.

This apart on the same day four persons died of suspected leptospirosis symptoms namely, Sujatha, 55 of Pozhikkara in Kollam, Eliyamma, 48 of Karur in Kottayam district, Uthaman, 48 of Paravoor in Ernakulam district and Hayarunniza, 45 of Neduva in Malappuram district.

The general administration department principal secretary Biswanath Sinha on Tuesday issued a circular in this regard


Leptospirosis has been confirmed on 258 people and dengue fever on 36 people so far this month.

On Tuesday alone leptospirosis was confirmed in 115 people with the largest number, 29 in Malappuram district, 19 in Pathanamthitta and 14 each in Kozhikode and Alappuzha.


During this month 44572 fever cases, 11 Malaria, 36 dengue fever, 1 chikungunya, 7337 acute diarrheal disease, and 297 chicken pox cases, 10 Mumps and 3 H1N1 cases have been confirmed.

Health minister KK Shailaja has reportedly asked the medical officers to follow a 30-day micro action plan to combat leptospirosis. The government is also taking measures to prevent the spread of dengue fever, she said recently.

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala has been recovering from the aftermath of rains, deluge and floods that affected the state with loss of hundreds of lives. On Sunday, September 2, the authorities recorded three more deaths due to leptospirosis and two deaths due to fever in Kerala.
