Parkinson's Disease affects between 7 to 10 million people nationwide.

A local woman is reaching out to those dealing with the disease, offering a unique dance class.

"I wanted the class to be about enjoying movement," Director of "Joy of Movement," Eve Fischberg said.

Fischberg is giving people with Parkinson's Disease a safe haven where they feel welcome.

"Eve makes it just all kinds of fun," Participant Kenna Diaz said.

Parkinson's is a movement disorder, causing shaking and difficulty with walking, movement, and coordination.

"Parkinson's is unfortunately increasing in incidents among our population," Fischberg said.

Eve said engaging in physical activity is very beneficial to those with Parkinson's.

"Flexibility, it helps a lot with developing deep and controlled respiration, helps with posture, balance," Fischberg explained.

The "Joy of Movement" class is an opportunity for dancers to bond in a positive social environment.

"The camaraderie and the fact that I can exercise," Participant Mary Jo Wasser said.

With over 40 years of healthcare experience from Eve, the disease hits close to home. "My father had Parkinson's, my father-in-law also had a Parkinson's-related disorder," Fischberg explained.

Every session ends with the group holding hands, nodding to each other, as a sign of endearment.

"This is what I want to do," Fischberg said. "And to be able to share that with people is just the most precious thing in the world to me and it makes me so happy."

Eve Fischberg said she can't do this by herself. If you or someone you know would like to get involved she would love to have more volunteers helping with classes. You can contact her via e-mail at evefischberg@gmail.com

Organizers hold the dance class for 12 weeks. All participants must register before joining the course. Classes are held Tuesday and Thursday at First Presbyterian Church in Springfield.

The Joy of Movement organization has been offering dance classes in Springfield since July 2016.
