10th human case of West Nile virus confirmed in Massachusetts

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health announced another human case of West Nile virus in the state, bringing the total to 10 in 2018.

The department said the most recent case of the virus involved a man in his 60's from Essex County, who was hospitalized.

“Due to information about where this individual was most likely exposed and continued findings of WNV in mosquitoes in the area, there is an increased chance that additional human illnesses could occur,” said Public Health Commissioner Monica Bharel. “That’s why it is important that people continue using insect repellents, covering exposed skin, and moving indoors when mosquitos are biting.’’

The risk for additional cases was raised to high in Lynn, Malden, Melrose, Revere, Saugus and Winthrop.

There have been four more human cases of the virus in Massachusetts in 2018 than all of 2017, when the total hit six.
