Dengue patient dies at Park Circus hospital
Garbage makes water in this Duttabad pond stagnant
KOLKATA: An eight-monthold dengue patient, Sahida Khatun, died at a hospital in the Park Circus area on Friday morning after suffering severe bleeding in the brain. Sources said the baby, who used to live in 45, Tiljala Road, had tested positive at the Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital earlier last month.
“From Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital, she was shifted to Institute of Child Health on August 21 in a very critical condition.
Doctors said that her condition had improved a few days ago but she suffered bleeding from the brain and that her platelet count also dipped,” said a source.

Dengue seems to be on its way to becoming a runaway problem in this particular area. Previous years have shown that this is the way a pan-city infection starts. We just hope, for the sake of our health, that civic authorities take note of this as-of-now localised problem and take corrective measures to weed it out of this area, which will also preempt its spread to other parts of the city.

According to KMC estimates, hundreds have been tested dengue NS1 positive so far this year.
Meanwhile, with two dengue deaths in a week, the focus is also now on Duttabad — an area under the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation with EM Bypass on one side and Salt Lake on the other. After dengue claimed the life of 10-year-old Narayan Shrestha on August 30, Akash Chowdhury, a nineyear-old who used to live within a few hundred meters of Shrestha’s house, died of dengue on Thursday.
A visit by TOI to Duttabad on Friday revealed that the area has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes with garbage and waste material thrown away in corners, making it ideal for water to accumulate. Also, there are several places on the banks of local ponds where buckets, tyres and other containers have been left open for days.

“I had suffered from dengue twice and last year my daughter also had dengue. This place has remained like this for ages,” said Somnath Das, a local resident.
Residents said the civic authorities sometimes clean the road-side garbage and spray bleaching powder. “They had cleaned the area a few days ago. But the waste has piled up again,” said Shibu Mandal.
“We have been living under this condition for years now. The place is full of mosquitoes. Many of us have suffered from dengue in the last few years,” said Mamata Seal.
Civic officials said the Metro project sites at Duttabad were potential areas for mosquitoes to breed. “There were several open containers and also garbage in places from where mosquito larvae were found. All these have been cleaned,” said Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation MMIiC (health) Pranay Roy.
