From may to September 2018 in Romania recorded 166 cases of meningitis and meningoencephalitis, caused by West Nile virus. Of these, 17 people died.

“Most deaths were registered in Bucharest (six), in the counties of Iasi (three) and OLT (two), and one case in the counties of Galati, Covasna, Constanta, Dambovita, Dolj and Teleorman”, – stated in the message.

It is noted that people get sick because of the bites of different species of mosquitoes, and disinfection of the area was hampered due to heavy rains.

The only carriers of the virus remain mosquitoes and birds, the disease is not transmitted from person to person.

Earlier it became known about the meningitis outbreak in the village of Powder in Transcarpathia. There ill 11 children. Died eight year old girl. Another child with severe generalized form is in the ICU.
