Four new cases of avian-based West Nile found in Anderson

Four new cases of West Nile Virus have been confirmed in birds in Anderson, according to Anderson County Emergency Management Division.

As a result, the city of Anderson and Pickens County Emergency Management, in partnership with Anderson County Emergency Management, will begin spraying the affected areas for mosquitoes Sept. 22.

The birds were found near the intersections of North Avenue and Main Street, Anderson; Camson Road and Hembree Road, Anderson; Porter Road and Central Road, Pendleton; and Cherry Street Extension and Woodhaven Drive, Pendleton.

The spraying will continue through Sept. 23, and will include the placement of larvicide briquettes in standing water on public lands.

According to Emergency Management officials, the pesticide does not pose a risk to humans or animals, but beekeepers with hives in the areas are encouraged to relocate the hives until the spraying is completed.

The larvicide briquettes will be effective for up to 45 days after they are placed.

No confirmed human cases of the disease have been found in Anderson County, Emergency Management officials said.

Spraying is expected to be completed by Monday morning.
