The City of Amarillo Environmental Health and Public Health Departments are reporting confirmation of the first positive West Nile Virus (WNV) mosquito trap this year in Potter County.
Environmental Health will continue mosquito prevention activities in this area. WNV is transmitted to humans through mosquito bites.
No confirmed human cases of WNV infection have been reported this year in Potter or Randall County, but this finding enhances the need for mosquito prevention and protection.
Following the simple steps of the four Ds can reduce your risk of mosquito bites:
- Drain all standing water to reduce mosquito breeding areas
- Dress in long sleeves and pants
- DEET: Wear insect repellant with DEET
- Daily: Follow these steps all day every day
Patients at higher risk of severe disease, including those over 50 years of age or with immune suppression (e.g. organ transplantation, chemotherapy, dialysis, HIV infection), should take particular preventive measures to avoid mosquito exposure.
Active surveillance for WNV in mosquitoes and humans is ongoing. For more information about WNV, please contact 806-378-6321. Report an increase in mosquito activity to AEH at (806) 378-9472.
