Low-cost rabies shots are being offered on World Rabies Day on Saturday at three local veterinary clinics.

The cost is $30 per animal, cash only.

“Owners of dogs and cats are required by law to vaccinate their pets against rabies and vaccinating pets is an important way to prevent the spread of this disease,” the region’s medical officer of health Dr. Wajid Ahmed said in a Monday news release from the Windsor-Essex Count Health Unit.

In 2017, 149 animals in Ontario tested positive for rabies, a fatal viral disease spread by the saliva of an infected animal. Saliva can enter the body through a bite or scratch from animals such as a dog, cat, raccoon, bat or fox.

The $30 rabies shots are being offered at: Ambassador Animal Hospital, 1345 Tecumseh Rd., W., in Windsor, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Harrow Animal Hospital, 110 King St. W., from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and Town and Country Animal Clinic, 2055 Sandwich West Parkway in LaSalle, from 8 a.m. to noon.

The shots are for healthy dogs and cats three months of age or older, that have not been vaccinated in the last year. Only rabies vaccines will be offered.

More information is available by calling 519-258-2146, ext. 4475, or at the health unit’s website.
