Veterinarians offer low-cost rabies vaccine clinics

This Friday is World Rabies Day and to celebrate, local veterinarians have organized three low-cost rabies vaccine clinics for pets.

The clinics, organized by the Essex County Veterinary Association are on Saturday, September 29 at three animal hospitals.

In Windsor, the clinic is at Ambassador Animal Hospital on Tecumseh Road West at South Cameron Boulevard from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

There are two clinics in the county, at the Harrow Animal Hospital on King Street West from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and at the Town and Country Animal Clinic near Windsor Crossing Premium Outlets on Sandwich West Parkway from 8 a.m. to noon.

Rabies is a fatal, viral disease spread in the saliva of animals like dogs, cats, foxes, raccoons, and bats. It can enter the body through a bite or scratch, and last year 149 animals tested positive for it in Ontario.

"Owners of dogs and cats are required by law to vaccinate their pets against rabies," said Dr. Wajid Ahmed, medical officer of health at the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit.
