Two children died on Monday, while two more have been kept under medical observation after they consumed tea and bread at their Ghatkopar residence.

The deceased have been identified as Nandini Yadav (3) and Kishor Yadav (4). As per hospital authorities, Nandini was 'brought dead' and Kishor died 20 minutes after he was admitted. The other two kids who have been kept under supervision are Rohit Yadav (12) and Krushna Yadav (8), siblings of the deceased.

According to Pant Nagar Police, the kids were residents of Kamraj Nagar slum.

"Nandini was just a toddler and didn't usually consume outside eatables. On Monday, the kids had a routine meal of daal and rice with their parents. Later in the evening, the parents had served them black tea and bread; they skipped dinner. The girl woke up late in the night complaining of excruciating stomach ache. She also started vomiting and frothing from the mouth. She was taken to Rajawadi Hospital at 2 am where she was declared dead," said Maniksingh Patil, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Ghatkopar Division.

As per police reports, when the parents returned from the hospital, Kishor also started complaining of uneasy feeling and pain in his legs. Kishor started running a high fever and began exhibiting symptoms that Nandini had. Kishor was also rushed to the same hospital, but succumbed shortly.

"Two kids died and we believe they might have consumed something their body could not take. Preliminary investigation suggest it is not a case of food-poisoning, but it can be established only after further investigation is done. Two other kids also began developing similar conditions, but survived after receiving medical aide at the right time. At present both are under observation and are recovering. Kishor had a history of getting fits frequently and he was taken to Rajawadi hospital on Sunday to be treated for the same. As of now, an Accidental Death Report (ADR) has been filed in the case. The family is being questioned and the bodies of both the kids have been sent for autopsy," Patil added.

"Indal Yadav, the father, is a carpenter and is going through a financial crisis. At times, the family would have nothing to eat at all," said Anil Kale, their neighbour.

A medical official from Rajawadi Hospital, said, "Two children have been kept under observation. There are no symptoms of food poisoning in them. They will be discharged from the hospital within a day."
