After 7-day fight, north Dum Dum resident succumbs to dengue

KOLKATA: A 46-year-old North Dum Dum resident succumbed to dengue at a south Kolkata nursing home on Monday night. This is the fourth dengue death on the northern fringes of the city this season. Das had been suffering from fever for a week.Das was a garment trader in Burrabazar and was a resident of Bisharpara-Kodalia, which is near Birarti under North Dum Dum municipality. He was recovering slowly and his platelet count rose from 16,000 to 35,000. Das’ platelet count had dropped to 16,000.His sister Sampurna said: “He was down with fever and was being treated by a local doctor.

The victim, Manas Das, had been admitted to the nursing home last Thursday with high fever and severe joint pain.His condition kept deteriorating and platelet count had plunged. Eventually, he suffered a cardio-respiratory failure. The death certificate issued by the nursing home mentioned dengue as the cause of death. This is the fourth dengue death on the northern fringes of the city this season. While Duttabad has recorded two deaths so far, Baguiati had one victim.Das’ family members alleged the nursing home had not taken prompt action even after his condition kept worsening. Even though his platelet count had improved, other complications cropped up. “While he kept deteriorating, nothing was done on an emergency basis. It led to a cardiorespiratory failure,” said a family member. Das had been suffering from fever for a week.Das was a garment trader in Burrabazar and was a resident of Bisharpara-Kodalia, which is near Birarti under North Dum Dum municipality. Das was suffering from high fever since September 18 and was admitted to Royd Nursing Home on Thursday after he tested NS1 positive. He had an acute breathing trouble at the time of his admission. Das’ platelet count had dropped to 16,000.His sister Sampurna said: “He was down with fever and was being treated by a local doctor. Later, we got him admitted to the nursing home. He was recovering slowly and his platelet count rose from 16,000 to 35,000. But the doctors at the nursing home didn’t attend to him properly despite our repeated appeals.”
