At least three to five cases of dengue are being reported daily from the city. Five fresh cases of dengue were reported today, taking the season count to 79. One case each was reported from Sector 39, 45, 51, 55, and Daria village.

Besides, 42 malaria and three chikungunya cases have already been reported from the city. Residents say there is lack of awareness on vector-borne diseases. Besides, fogging to battle the mosquito menace is rarely seen.

“We have never seen fogging being carried out in our area. Since such cases are being reported daily, the Health Department should start a campaign to sensitise residents,” said Surjeet Singh, a resident of Sector 45.

However, the department claimed that they were extensively carrying out fogging and awareness activities. Field and surveillance activities had been stepped up. Awareness activities were being strengthened through the involvement of NSS volunteers, said an official.

Another health official said, “One of the main reasons behind the rise in the number of dengue cases is the recent incessant rain, which led to widespread stagnation of water all over the city, providing a breeding ground for aedes mosquitoes. Favourable day temperature and humidity are also conducive for breeding. A spike is usually seen in September and October.”

“Community participation is important. Residents need to keep their surroundings clean, dispose of garbage properly and not allow water to collect around their houses and workplaces. They should wear full-sleeved clothes and socks, besides using mosquito repellants,” he suggested.
