A water main break in Cordova this morning put the whole town on a boil order. it was an inconvenient morning for Cordova residents. Many woke up to no running water in their homes. This is due to a leak that drained the town's water tower.

"I went to take a shower this morning and found out I had no water," says JoAnne Boone, a resident of Cordova.

The main break was discovered between two and three in the morning. Early risers, like Boone, were caught of guard.

"I went down to the basement to see if I had any leaks down there. At that point, I started getting text messages from people telling me we had no water."

Cordova's mayor says MidAmerica responded quickly to the problem. Public Water Works also on the site getting down to business. They'll dig about five to six feet under to locate the broken main. Until then the town mobilized to go about their day with slight adjustments.

"We're giving out free water today," says village clerk, Brittany Calvert. "Just stop by at the village and we've got bottled water for whoever needs them... We've got about ten cases but we can always go get more."

Running water has returned to most homes after it was shut off this morning. The entire town remains under a boil order until further notice.

The boil order will be lifted once a water sample is tested and cleared of possible contaminants.

A waterworks contractor says, "the required sample will be done after the repair. That is why the town is under boil order right now. It's just a precautionary boil order."

The water sample is sent to a private lab in the Quad Cities and then to the Illinois EPA. It takes 24 hours to test the water and clear it of any contaminants before the boil order is lifted.

Boil orders are standard practice in a water main break. The town does not expect to find anything dangerous in Cordova's water sample, but residents should still heed the boil order until it's lifted.
