At least a dozen people have died due to dengue in West Bengal in the last two months, while last week the vector borne disease claimed two more lives in Kolkata.
In north Bengal, more than 50 people are hospitalised in sub-urban and rural areas.
At least 40 people died of dengue in the State last year.
The latest dengue death took place last Thursday in South Kolkata's Behala area where an elderly man died at a private hospital.
Gokul Mukhopadhayay, a resident of Behala's Paranasree area was suffering from high fever for about 10 days and was undergoing treatment at a local nursing home. He was shifted to a private hospital after his condition deteriorated. He passed away on Thursday morning.
Another such incident took place in the southern fringes of the city where a 10-year-old girl Parismita Ghosh died of dengue at a private hospital.
A senior Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) official said that with the two latest deaths the number of lives lost due to dengue in Kolkata has reached 11 this year.
No response
Calls to Director of Health Services Ajay Chakraborty went unanswered.
The disease is spreading fast in north Bengal. More than 50 people are affected of which 25 are from the Phansidewa block of Darjeeling district. Many are also affected in the Matigara block. North Bengal has not reported any death as of now.
A school student, Akash Chowdhury, succumbed to the disease the first week of September in the Duttabad area of Salt Lake, an elected member of the civic body said.
A middle-aged woman Uma Sarkar from Behala in South Kolkata and a 10-year-old student, Arush Dutta, from the Maniktola area in north Kolkata died of dengue this month.
Krishna Hazra, a resident of Ultadanga in north Kolkata, also succumbed to the decease in September.
