KIEV, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- A person has been confirmed to be infected with cutaneous anthrax in Ukraine's southern Odessa region, the country's Ministry of Health said on Tuesday.

The man is believed to have caught the disease from an infected cattle during slaughtering in the village of Minyaylivka, which lies near the Ukrainian-Moldovan border, the ministry said in a statement.

Four other people, who aided in the slaughtering, are being monitored in a hospital for suspected symptoms of the disease.

All residents of the village have been placed under out-of-hospital medical observation for 15 days.

Cutaneous anthrax, which affects the skin, is the least serious form of the disease. It is usually contracted when a person with a cut or sore on their skin comes into direct, unprotected contact with anthrax spores on a sick or dead animal.
